$32 Million, 4-Time All-Star WouldBe Pleased to Be Traded' From Red Sox: Insider

Kenley Jansen Reportedly Open to Trade as Red Sox Struggle in AL East

Despite maintaining a winning record so far this season, the Boston Red Sox face an uphill battle in the highly competitive AL East, which includes powerhouses like the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles. As their postseason hopes begin to fade, veteran closer Kenley Jansen may be eyeing an opportunity to finish the year with a contending team.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Jansen would welcome a trade away from Boston. During a livestream hosted by Bleacher Report on platform X, Heyman noted, "The Red Sox have a winning record right now, but it doesn’t seem like they’re truly competing for the division. I think Jansen would be happy to be traded at this point."

Potential Reunion with the Dodgers?

One potential landing spot for Jansen could be the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team well on its way to a postseason appearance despite bullpen struggles. The Dodgers' relief corps currently holds a 4.18 ERA and ranks among the worst in terms of hits allowed. Heyman identified Jansen as a logical trade target, citing his deep ties to the franchise.

"Jansen is the name that comes to mind as a trade candidate for the Dodgers," Heyman explained. "He was a long-time Dodger, started his career there, and doesn’t seem to be in an ideal situation with the Red Sox right now."

Jansen’s Performance in Boston

Statistically, Jansen has performed well for the Red Sox. In 7.2 innings of work, he has recorded five saves, a 2.35 ERA, and 12 strikeouts. However, with Boston teetering near the .500 mark and dealing with early-season injuries, the four-time All-Star and MLB’s active leader in career saves may feel out of place on a team unlikely to make a deep playoff run.

Boston May Need to Cover Part of Jansen’s Salary

Jansen signed a two-year, $32 million contract with the Red Sox in 2022. If Boston were to trade him, they might have to retain part of his remaining salary to facilitate a deal.

"He’s got a good contract, so if the Red Sox trade him, they might need to pay part of that deal," Heyman suggested.

This wouldn’t be the first time the Dodgers considered a reunion with Jansen. Earlier in the offseason, the team reportedly explored trading outfielder Manuel Margot to Boston for Jansen before ultimately dealing Margot to the Minnesota Twins instead.

While those discussions never gained much traction, another slide out of playoff contention could push the Red Sox to revisit trade talks. If Jansen expresses a strong desire to leave, the Dodgers—or other contenders—may have to assemble an enticing package to acquire him before the trade deadline.
